    My “Go To Book” for Designing Upper Body Classes for My Students, March 7, 2012

    As a yoga teacher and woman in her 50’s I am keenly aware of how important it is to build and maintain strength in my body and help my students to do the same. Mr VanEs does a fantastic job in his book to explain the many health benefits of bodyweight exercises. It has clearly written instructions for all levels along with some great photos. The chapter on Osteoporosis is an awakening call for women of all ages. As a teacher I refer to this book often and highly recommend it, not only to my students, but to any woman who wants to do what’s within her power to live a long healthy life!

    A must read for any woman hoping to increase upper body strength. Easy to follow and very good illustrations. Very rooted in yoga tradition but you don’t have to be a yoga practitioner to be able to use. I’m getting another copy for my 80+ mom!

    This book is not what I expected. I read a review somewhere (not here and don’t remember where) but I got he impression the book was for seniors. I purchased the book for my Mom who is a senior. The exercises show in the book are IMO not appropriate for many over 60 or even some over 30. This misunderstanding is my fault and not the books. While the exercises may not be appropriate for seniors the health information in the book is for everyone. Only thing is this is an exercise book not a health book. Too much of the book is spent on health issues not exercises. Not only that but the vast majority of the exercise are done on your hands and knees. A position like doing push ups or a downward facing dog Yoga pose. If you flip through the book and just look at the exercises it appears >90% are done while in this position. If you have shoulder issues I strongly suggest you look elsewhere. I wish the book would have had a better variety of exercises and that they appropriate for a larger age demographic. I really don’t understand the reviews posted for this book.
