Energy, focus, strength all in a tiny, micro scoop, February 28, 2014

This review is from: BPI Sports 1.M.R. Vortex Pre-Workout, 50 Servings, Fruit Punch (Grocery)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What’s this?)
I work part-time at a supplement retailer and have tried dozens upon dozens of pre-workouts. At a certain point, it is difficult to notice differences from one to the next, as most utilize the same ingredients, but in varying doses under the proprietary blend. I have never been a fan of BPI’s products, including their flagship 1.M.R. For some reason, 1.M.R. has never produced a good workout and, strangely, causes me to crash/lose energy halfway through my sessions. So I had huge reservations when 1.M.R. Vortex was first launched, but the minimal ingredient profile did pique my curiosity. So, I took the plunge and am now getting my second tub. Here’s why:

    ENERGY/STRENGTH
Right out of the gate, Vortex hits pretty hard — even at the recommended 1 scoop dose (a minuscule 3 grams). Every time I took Vortex, from the first scoop to the last few remaining grains, it gave me more than enough energy to fuel my intense workouts, and kept my energy levels sustained for the rest of the day. Though there wasn’t much of a “pump” aspect, I did have huge increases in strength, which I wasn’t really expecting — considering this is really more of a stimulant-based pre-workout.

    INGREDIENT PROFILE
Sparse, but perfect. No creatine, which is great if you dose creatine as a separate supplement, or if you’re trying to avoid it. Just a well-dosed amount of glycerol for increasing vascularity, and a superb stimulant matrix. NOTE: for those who are sensitive to Yohimbe, start small, as it may cause reactions (heart palpitations, increased sweating, nausea, etc). But I think BPI did a smart thing by keeping this pre-workout to a minimalist profile, not adding a host of fillers or unnecessary ingredients.

    TASTE/MIXIBILITY
This is really the only knock against the product. The flavor, Fruit Punch, is on the medicinally-sweet end, but if you chug it quickly, is fairly palatable. Pre-workouts are not meant to be coddled like a recreational drink, so I tend not to judge flavor too harshly. The powder does not mix very well, yielding floaters in my shaker cup. Not a huge concern, but worth noting.

    VALUE
Each tub, if taken at a one-scoop dose, yields 50 servings. At the current price, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better value in the pre-workout category.

    OVERALL
As I mentioned at the top, I’m starting my second tub, which rarely happens, as I bounce around from brand to brand, only occasionally coming back for seconds on any pre-workout. But 1.M.R. Vortex is something different and I highly recommend trying it, especially for those who want something unique among a field of blase products.

Not what I expected, but not disappointed. CLEANER THAN THE REST., January 29, 2014
    By

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
The product, at first, was extremely potent. I have an extremely high natural caffeine tolerance (Not joking, red-line energy drinks barely affect me), and quickly develop tolerances to herbals and other non-extreme, non-chemical, and non-harmful stimulants, so this review MUST BE TAKEN IN LIGHT OF THE AFOREMENTIONED FACT.

I like this product because it is CLEAN.

My body is not left with detrimental substances in it after using this product, and one or two scoops later (not three… or four… or five…) I can feel a moderate energy boost characterized by increased endurance as opposed to hyper-stimulated biological desperation mechanisms, such as those induced by chemical-based stimulants like NOExplode (which gives me such a terrible headache…).

I DID buy this for weightlifting (its designated purpose), and it DOES provide a noticeable energy boost. Caffeine, as it were, is an empty energy, but the herbals in this product are a relatively good moderator and provide a subsistent increase in strength.

This product is, literally, caffeine and herbals. That’s why I bought it and I am NOT disappointed.

All in all (to use a druidic axiom) it is, indeed, a great product for a few simple reasons; It is Clean (no headache, no poisonous effect), it Does work (a moderate, 7/10 energy. And do you really WANT to feel like you just ate Meth? If so, then you might at well just go ahead and…), and it tastes GREAT (I just eat the powder straight. It doesn’t stir well well in water; You have to shake it in a bottle. But the powder is quite edible; It’s like Kool-Aid without the bitterness).

    It’s a great product.

If you’re looking for something super methy, look elsewhere. If you’re looking for something you can use Sustainably and Consistently, here you are. I might not recommend using it every day, but if you use it consistently you’re not looking at long-term health effects unless you eat a LOT of it EVERY day for Months.

    But that’s caffeine for you.

Did not do much for me… awful flavor, March 24, 2014

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What’s this?)
I’ve tried quite a few pre-workout supplements with varied levels of success, however this product provided me with the least amount of energy of any I’ve tried.

First, this supplement does not mix well at all… I finally found that using a blender provides the most consistent mixture, but still not complete. I began with the single-scoop serving to start off (as recommended). After three days I noticed no change to my endurance/energy whatsoever. On the fourth try, I used two scoops of the mix and noticed only a slight improvement in energy that lasted about one hour. Considering directions state that I should take it 15-30 minutes prior to my workout, this only leaves me with 30-45 minutes of energy. This wasn’t much of a concern for me since the energy improvement was so little that it didn’t effect me. I continued to take it for two more days, but I gave up since two scoops was the maximum daily dosage and it didn’t provide me with enough energy to effect my workout at all. I log all my workouts and going back over them from the six days I had taken Vortex, I saw nothing that would suggest any sort of improvement outside of regular progression.

The packaging claims that this product contains as much caffeine as two cups of coffee, however after ending my usage of this product, I drank two cups of coffee shortly before a workout and found that I had significantly more energy during my workout, so I can’t explain why this product didn’t work better for me. I can only assume that there isn’t as much caffeine in the mix as they claim.

The worst part of this product is the flavor… the sickeningly fake sweetness of the mix not only makes it difficult to drink, but I find myself drinking an extra glass of water to rid myself of the lingering flavor. After six days using this product, even if it had worked, I would have stopped… one of the worst flavors I have tried in all the years I’ve been using pre-workout supplements, in my opinion. It should be noted, however, that I’m not a big fan of many artificial sweetener on the market today. Those who aren’t repulsed by them may find this flavor more palatable.

After reading all the positive reviews, I’m shocked and disappointed that this product didn’t do more for me. I’ve used other caffeine-based pre-workout energy supplements that provided me with noticeably more energy.
