Can’t live without clean spirulina!, June 13, 2016

Really good stuff to take everyday for many reasons. I normally buy the 16 oz bottle of Nutrex spirulina powder and take approximately 2-3 heaping teaspoons a day but have not had the chance to restock after running out because the price for it here on Amazon fluctuates all the time from $24 to $40 for the same product. That is because it is always sold by different sellers! The loose powder form is the best way to take it because it is unprocessed without binders and other ingredients to form tablets. I purchased this jar of spirulina tablets as back-up until I restock kthe powder form and for its convenience of being able to pop them in my mouth anytime I need without having to mix with a shake or drink. Tablet form is easier to administer to my dog as well, whereas I normally sprinkle the spirulina powder into the dog food.
There are so many spirulina tablets and capsules available online but most of them come from India and China, then processed in the USA. Spirulina from India and China have been found to be contaminated with lead, mercury and arsenic. No thank you!
Nutrex was suggested to me from my holistic doctor who has a friend who has visited the Nutrex farm and knows it is safe of heavy metals and contaminants.
I take spirulina for its anti-aging properties, skin and eye health, rich nutrients to boost immunity and to fight all kinds of day to day radiation, including the terrible Fukushima radiation already sweeping onto our west coast shores from Japan. If you don’t know what I am talking about, do some online research and be informed.
For now, I plan on taking spirulina everyday for the rest of my life and so far my favorite trust worthy brand is Nutrex.

DETAILED REVIEW: Best spirulina, at potentially the best price (20+ year user), November 3, 2014

What follows is my review I posted on the 1lb jars of Nutrex Spirulina a few years ago, with a few extra comments regarding this bulk 5 lb option (which is the way I buy it).

My so-called “reviews” are typically long. This is no exception. If that’s not what you’re after, I provide the IN BRIEF section at the top. If you have the time and inclination to browse over a lot more information about spirulina, please read the FULL REVIEW. If you find this review helpful, please click the button that says so. Thanks.

With this brand of Spirulina you are on to a good thing! Especially as far as taste and quality are concerned.

Simply put, after 20+ years of Spirulina usage, this is the best Spirulina I know of, at one of the the best prices (and shipping options) I have seen anywhere online and off-line. If the best tasting Spirulina, made to high standards, is what you are looking for, this is the one to buy. In my opinion, it’s best to pass on the slightly cheaper non-Hawaiian varieties (from India, China, etc.). There are a few other US made brands that are also good, but for reasons explored below, I stick with the Hawaiian variety.

If you’ve never had spirulina, try this one first, as that taste is the easiest to handle. If you’ve had (non-Hawaiian) spirulina and didn’t like the taste, try this one as it will likely taste better.
Worried about Fukushima fall-out? Nutrex spirulina comes up clean. Only into RAW foods? Nutrex spirulina is dried at below 116F using a patented “OceanChilled” drying process. It’s about as raw as you’ll get unless you grow your own fresh spirulina. Looking for organic spirulina only? Nutrex was certified organic up until around 2008. Then the rules changed around the use of what’s called Chilean Nitrate. So they dropped the certification, as Cyanotech believe other nitrogen sources are no “cleaner” or better than Chilean Nitrate. So, in my opinion, Nutrex is as good as certified organic, but if the certification matters to you, check out NOW Foods organic spirulina.

That’s my IN BRIEF review in a nutshell.

I like to share detailed information where appropriate, so people like yourself can inform yourself if you so desire. For my more in-depth info, please read on:

Let me first put this review into a helpful context.

I have been eating Spirulina on an almost daily basis for approximately the past 20 years. Since my mid-teens I’ve been making big green looking smoothies every morning. My father and I affectionately refer to them as my “Swamp Water” or “Swamp juice” drinks.

This particular Spirulina is from a fantastic high-tech Spirulina production facility on the coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. They use ultra pure deep ocean water for both growing and drying the Spirulina. It is dried at a low temperature to keep the nutrients in tact (at or below 116F / 46C).

It is worth noting that quite often the 1 lb jars actually work out cheaper, per pound, than the 5 lb bags (here on Amazon). The 1 lb jars often drop to around $23 to $25 each, which is around $115 to $125 for 5 lbs. The 5 lb bags are often selling on Amazon for around $140. Right now (Nov 4, 2014) I see 5 lb is only $118, which is the best I’ve seen in the last few years. So currently it’s the best deal, but be sure to check as it might change by the time you read this.

If you are having your order shipped internationally (via freight forwarding, or a friend, or simply in your luggage, since Amazon don’t ship this item internationally) the 5 lb bag weighs a LOT less than 5x 1 lb jars, as the glass is heavy. So even if the 5 lb bag costs a little more than 5x 1lb jars, it may be worth it to cut back on weight.

If you buy the 5 lb bag, one concern for some people is whether they will use it quickly enough before it deteriorates. Here is what I suggest: Take a few weeks to a months worth out of the bag and store in an air-tight glass jar (use an old Nutrex spirulina jar, if you have one), and store the 5 lb bag in the fridge or freezer. Keep it well sealed. It will last a LONG time (many years) stored in the freezer. I recommend to NOT use the main bag (especially if you keep it in the fridge or freezer) on a daily basis. Aside from the fact the bag is hard to seal well, and the snap-lock seal will likely peel away from the bag if used often, it will also keep the spirulina dryer. Because refrigerated spirulina is much colder than the atmosphere in your house, each time you open the bag a little moisture will condensate onto the powder (this is especially true in humid [60% +] environments).

I’d been eating Spirulina for perhaps 5 years before I tried this…
