Happy with the health benefits I’ve seen as a result of using the fish oil gels. I don’t eat any fish so I have been lacking in the omega 3 department forever. These have been pretty reasonable price wise. Some of the options on the market are ridiculous, but the Nature Made brand is pretty median which I’m comfortable with. I only have to take 2 capsules per day- a lot of other brands give you smaller pills but you’re expected take 4-6 of them which I really have a hard time with. It does have a very mild fishy taste so I suggest taking the capsules with a flavored drink if that bothers you. The fish oil helped me with some personal health issues as well as helped diminish some of my joint pain which has been a big struggle for me.

The fish oil definitely helped reduce the pain but it wasn’t gone. My knees were my biggest problem. Since the fish oil was helping, I looked to find other natural supplements that might help ease the pain. My biggest relief has come since combining my fish oil intake with glucosamine and chondroitin; NOW Foods Glucosamine & Chondroitin (60 Capsules) + FREE Cissus Joint Powder 100 Grams. What a difference that made. The fish oil helped but when I used it with the other supplements I was the closest to pain free I’d been since I was a kid. My knees bent without sharp, staggering pain every time. It became easier to climb the stairs…what great results. I highly recommend the natural route for any and all health problems like this. It worked for me.

    Actually has 360 mg, January 16, 2010

The true dose is only revealed by adding the EPA and the DHA. One softgel has 216 mg of EPA and 144 mg of DHA. So, one softgel has 360 mg of helpful fish oil and the remaining 840 mg is filler fish oil.

When comparing fish oil, look at the back panel supplement facts. Add the EPA and DHA to get the true MG and make sure you look at the serving size. Nature made has 2 softgels per serving size, so you must divide by 2 to get the per softgel info.

Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega or Twin Labs Mega appear to be better choices.

In my quest for heart health I’m not sticking with one brand but trying all different types of fish oil or cod liver oil. This purchase is my latest one.

    1) Cost: The cost per oz. or cost per capsule is often misleading because different products (even within brands) have different potencies. To find the real cost, divide the cost by the total amount of DHA+EPA (the key omega-3’s) in a bottle.

For example, this bottle has 150 servings (300 capsules) at 600mg DHA+EPA per serving (2 capsules per serving). That’s 150 servings X 600mg DHA+EPA = 90,000mg or 90g of DHA+EPA per bottle. Divide that by the current cost will give you the price per gram. And to that you have to add sales tax if applicable and shipping. It’s usually more cost effective to buy enough items to get free shipping from Amazon.

    2) The product itself: The capsules are big, bigger than other fish oil capsules I’m used to. I also like to bite the capsule as I don’t like swallowing pills of any sort. As this fish oil is from sardines and anchovies I can tell you that they have a very strong anchovy taste, if you can’t stand anchovies on your pizza you might not like this, but I’m fine. I usually have this with tea or coffee so any fish taste is instantly washed away. And some other products have lemon oil to disguise the taste. For me, I like sushi, so fishy taste doesn’t bother me at all. (After taking about 100 gels I don’t notice the taste anymore.)

    3) Safety: This product specifically states that dioxins, PCBs, furans, and mercury are removed or not detectable within certain limits. I will only buy products that has something like that on it. For example, I was going to buy the NatureMade cod liver oil, but I could not find that statement anywhere on it’s website or on the bottle and so I passed on that and got this instead.

    4) Potency: About 1000 mg of fish oil is recommended per day from most sources that I read; the FDA does not give a recommendation. Every product is a little different but they seem to range +/- 200mg of that recommendation. This product gives you 2400mg fish oil per day in two capsules. Some products give you their recommended dosage all the way from 1 to 5 capsules, i.e. you take from 1 to 5 capsules to get that recommended dosage. 5 capsules seem a lot but one of the Carlson products does exactly that.

    Summary:
Source: Small fish (anchovy and sardines), deep ocean, not fish farmed.
    Method: Molecular distillation.
Toxins: Mercury, PCB’s, dioxins removed/not detected.
    Amounts:
1200mg total fish oil per capsule.
    EPA+DHA 300mg per capsule.
    EPA+DHA 90,000mg/90g per bottle (300 capsules).
Value: Divide price by 90g (the amount of EPA+DHA per bottle) to get a price per gram of EPA+DHA and a comparison value against other brands.
