Nutrigold VS. Prescription(Lovaza),
When buying an Omega-3 supplement you want to check how much EPA and DHA is actually provided per serving (EPA and DHA are the beneficial fatty acids you are looking for in Omega-3’s). Having the background of someone working in the medical field I recommended Nutrigold to my father who happens to be a heart patient. The amount of Omega-3’s(specifically EPA & DHA) provided per capsule for Nutrigold are slighter higher than his prescription strength Lovaza. Nutrigold: 750mg EPA + 250mg DHA vs Lovaza: 475mg EPA + 365mg DHA. As an added bonus they cost much less than the prescription. Don’t fall for the gimmicks of the big drug companies who pay the FDA millions to get approval and pass the cost onto the consumer. I would highly recommended this product to anyone looking for a great source of essential Omega-3’s. I will follow up this review at a later time with more info with regards to taste and compliance.

UPDATE(06/04/2012):
I recently visited the IFOS(International Fish Oil Standard) website(Google it). They are an independent lab in Ontario, Canada that tests fish for consistency and heavy metal content. I was unable to find any Nutrigold info on their site. So I emailed Nutrigold support a few days ago to request a copy of the IFOS Certificate from their quality control department(IFOS website suggested this). I received an email this morning with the certificate attached and they even offered to send me an updated certificate when their new batch gets analyzed. The lab results are ecactly in line with what the product claims with complete accuracy in the amount of essential Omega-3s provided. This product is 90% of the stuff your looking for (EPA + DHA) and that is a really good number. I found this info to be very reassuring of my decision to purchase this product. Excellent Omega-3 “bang” for your buck,
This is what I’ve recently learned about shopping for fish oil supplements: look at the CONCENTRATION of Omega-3 present in a given supplement. In the case of Omega-3 Gold, it contains 750 mg of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and 250 mg of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). In other words 1000 mg of each 1250 mg softgel is actual Omega-3 fatty acids, i.e. the actual stuff you’re taking these to get. The remaining 250 or so mg is just fat, which, while not necessarily bad for you, isn’t the same thing as Omega-3 (also a fat; a particular kind).
The label from the bottle of a different brand I’ve bought in the past lists, per softgel: 1200 mg Fish Body Oils (marine lipid concentrate). Of that, 400 mg is EPA and 200 mg is DHA. That’s only 1/2 Omega-3. Other supplements, including a lot of less-expensive ones, can be as little as 1/3 or 1/4 Omega-3.
For me, this means:
If I’m comparing brands on a softgel-by-softgel basis it may look like I’m getting a good deal with the cheaper brand, when in fact I may need to take more capsules of it to get a proper dose of Omega-3. For that reason a seemingly pricier brand like Omega-3 Gold starts to look like a much better deal.
When I’m trying to work out the right dosage for me, I need to do a little extra math when I go from brand to brand, because two different brands don’t necessarily match up capsule-for-capsule, or mg-to-mg.
I hate taking pills, and have to carry what I do take around with me when I travel: so if I can get more Omega-3 out of fewer pills–as I can with Omega-3 Gold–so much the better.
Anyways, no real problems with it so far–for being such a big 1250 mg of fish oil it doesn’t seem any harder to swallow than any 1000 mg softgels I’ve taken. It contains no orange or lemon “flavor”, but any lingering fishy aftereffects range from subtle to nonexistent. My wife, who’s much more sensitive to these sorts of things than I am, has had no complaints.
It’s molecularly distilled, which is important for avoiding PCBs and heavy metals, and seems to help with the odor too.
