At my age, you start to lose a lot of function. I don’t feel as strong as I once did. I am not as muscular and I have a lot of aches and pains with overexertion. It’s unfortunate because in my prime I was a beast. But, this is to be expected I suppose. No one is very well prepared to age and some do so more gracefully than others. I’ve become a bit of a mess in my opinion. Taking the krill oil has helped me retain some of the muscle mass I would have ultimately lost otherwise. I am thankful as it allows me to feel more like the ‘old me’ than I expected.

Muscles aren’t the only problem area. I struggle a lot with joint pain as well. For that I take a combination; Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM Blend w/ White Willow Bark 750 mg (60 Capsules) + FREE Cissus Joint Powder 100 Grams. The three work together to keep your joint fluid flowing and make sure you’re as physically capable as possible. Taking the krill oil with glucosamine and chondroitin has given me an improved stamina and physical ability I haven’t seen since my 40s! I am very thankful.

I am a physician. I was on lipitor for about 4 years until I found out it was giving me rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown). The manufacturers of statins state that this is a rare side effect and I even counselled my patients that this is about a 1/200 incidence. Well after delving into the research a bit more it turns out that pretty much everyone taking statins has some degree of muscle pathology on biopsy, with the majority being subclinical…but not insignificant. Being a work-out nut this could not be tolerated.

I stopped the Lipitor and went on a low fat diet (20% fat) with Mega Red. To be fair I am also taking a proprietary 3-6-9 omega oil blend as well (Udo’s Blend) although it is not clear that this affects cholesterol levels and makes no claims to. I have been on the Mega Red for about 2 months and the low fat diet for about 2 weeks and got my levels rechecked. Total cholesterol went from 240 (pre-lipitor) to 179. LDL from 160 to 119 and HDL from 35 to 40. All as good or better than I got on 20 mg of Lipitor.

Now I no longer have to worry about muscle breakdown and my LFT’s are normal for the first time in 4 years. As an added bonus I can get this locally for about $27 for a 4-month supply (with coupon and buy-1-get-1 deals) which is about 1/4 the cost of Lipitor. Well this is one anecdotal success story so take it for what it’s worth. I have put a lot of energy into exercizing and going low fat as well so under those circumstances I can say that it seems to work for me andI am very happy with the results.

Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil vs Nine Top-Rated Krill Oils And A Top-Rated Fish Oil, April 9, 2013

This is a side-by-side comparison between ten brands of krill oil: Nutrigold Krill Oil Gold (1000 mgs), Nutrigold Krill Oil Gold (500 mgs), Now Foods Neptune Krill Oil (1000 mgs), Now Foods Neptune Krill Oil (500 mgs), Schiff Mega Red Extra Strength Omega-3 Krill Oil, Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil, Viva Labs Krill Oil, Jarrow Formulas Neptune Krill Oil, Source Naturals NKO Neptune Krill Oil, and Source Naturals Arctic Pure Krill Oil, and a brand of omega-3 fish oil, Nutrigold Triple Strength Omega-3 Gold Fish Oil.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS: Omega-3 fatty acids are what make krill oil and fish oil so beneficial. There are three major components of omega-3 fatty acids in these products: EPA (which is good for your heart, circulatory system, lowering triglycerides, depression and mood orientation, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory for soothing joint pains), DHA (which is good for your mental acuity, or if you are pregnant, nursing an infant, or for children), and “other.” Other omega-3s, like DPA and SDA, are types of fatty acids which are easily converted to EPA in the body. In most fish oils, the amount of these other fatty acids is low, but in highly concentrated oils, it can be a significant amount. The important components are EPA and DHA.

KRILL OIL VS FISH OIL: Krill oil is an omega-3 nutrient and is an alternative source of omega-3 than fish oil. Some folks prefer krill oil over fish oil because they believe it has increased bioavailability and better absorption than fish oil, and contains the additional nutrients, Astaxanthin and Phospholipids. In fact, this is correct. Krill oil has better bioavailability and absorption than fish oil and contains Astaxanthin and Phospholipids, neither of which are contained in fish oil. However, from the perspective of potency, krill oil contains less omega-3 fatty acids per gel cap than a high grade fish oil gel cap such as Nutrigold Triple Strength Omega-3 Gold Fish Oil. So, in order to obtain the same omega-3 benefits from krill oil that you do from a high grade fish oil, you need to take more krill oil gel caps, despite the fact that krill oil is more bioavailable and better absorbed than fish oil. This translates into additional cost.

ASTAXANTHIN: Astaxanthin is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. It is a red-pink substance found in various seafoods such as salmon, trout, krill, lobster and cooked shrimp. It is responsible for the red color of salmon meat, cooked shellfish and flamingo feathers. It is present in krill oil but not in fish oil.

The presence of astaxanthin in krill oil, combined with other naturally occurring antioxidants in the oil (Vitamins E and A), provides protection against oxidation of the oil, making it stable for a long time. It also protects the body against free radical attacks which can cause aging of the cells. Antioxidants are usually added in fish oil to prevent the oil from oxidizing as they do not have any on their own.

PHOSPHOLIPIDS: Phospholipids facilitate the absorption of omega-3 into your system. It, too, is present in krill oil but not in fish oil. In krill oil, the omega-3 fatty acids are attached to phospholipids whereas the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are attached to triglycerides. The phospholipids contribute to better absorption and utilization of the EPA & DHA by the cells, making krill oil more bio-effective than fish oil.

SOURCE OF KRILL OIL AND FISH OIL: Unlike fish oil, which comes primarily from fish such as anchovies, sardines, mackerel, cod, pollock and whiting, krill oil comes from krill, a crustacean that looks somewhat like a small shrimp.

ALERGIC REACTION TO KRILL OIL: Since krill is a crustacean, many folks may have an allergic reaction to krill oil. If you are allergic to shellfish, you need to be aware of this.

BREAKDOWN: Below is a breakdown of these supplements.
