The Life Plan: How Any Man Can Achieve Lasting Health, Great Sex, and a Stronger, Leaner Body

LOOK AND FEEL TWENTY YEARS YOUNGER WITH THE LIFE PLAN! Back in 1998, Dr. Life was sixty years old and a stereotype of the aging man: he was overweight with a noticeable gut and little muscle tone. His low libido was ruining his self-esteem. He felt tired all the time, yet no amount of sleep made him feel well rested. It wasn’t until a cardiologist read him the riot act that he began to make the critical diet and lifestyle adjustments that led him to look and feel younger than ever. More impo

The advice in this book regarding diet, nutrition, exercise and stress management is valid and worthwhile, but readers must realize that Dr. Life acknowledges using and having used Human Growth Hormone. In short, readers are not going to achieve a physique like Dr. Life’s without using Human Growth Hormone, and restrictions on the the prescription of Human Growth Hormone make it increasingly difficult to find a physician willing to prescribe HGH. Dr. Life’s book is plainly designed to draw traffic to the websites of Dr. Life and Cenegenics. In this regard, Dr. Life’s book reminds me of the bodybuilding magazines that use pictures of physiques built on steroids to sell (based upon a misleading message) protein powders and other supplements.

Overall good, but a little outdated information, January 8, 2012

Overall, there is certainly some very good information in the book. And, I like Dr. Life’s passion for anti-aging management. Thumbs up! Sure, it takes money to do the (pharmacy) regimen he does, but anyone can benefit from better nutrition and exercise. They just need to know how and what. However, I have a few concerns with some of the nutrition advice. First of all, soy products are not the best option for men at this time. There is a lot of scientific evidence that Genetically Modified soy products act as estrogen in the body and can help produce more. That is the LAST thing we need to build muscle and stay lean. I was happy that he included myofascial release work (using the foam roller) and does Pilates (I teach Pilates). As far as the strength work, nothing overly new here. However, that is not a bad thing. You really don’t need to get too fancy. The exercises that use a lot of muscles at one time are the best to boost testosterone and growth hormone. He’s right on the money there. However, many men in our age category (45 and up) may have a lot of degenerative issues with our spines (sciatica/stenosis) where doing exercises like deadlifts, back squats, bent over heavy rows etc may be contraindicated. That’s great that he is in that picture of health to do those exercises. Although looking at his pics in the book, his form is not the best on some of those moves (poor spine mechanics) and I would be concerned for his back if I were his trainer. The book’s target market is us! I feel his resistance program should have been targeted toward his market, a little more than it was. His routines could easily be found in any muscle rag for a 20 year old. Many of us just cannot or should not perform those moves anymore. Anyway, to end on a positive note, I enjoyed his supplementation information. Great job there. My advice as a professional is do buy the book, but if you plan on doing this workout and are not experienced, PLEASE GET A QUALIFIED TRAINER! Look for trainers that have experience and lots of credentials. Sorry, but the 20 year old guys just don’t understand our age group well, usually. Enjoy the book, but be safe with your program.

Well, suffice it to say that I am a bit stunned that just the basic diet advice in this book has made a huge impact on how I feel physically in a very short time. I am 47 and overweight, (320, used to weigh 147 and did martial arts for years) and out of shape. Paying the price for years of sedentary jobs and too much time in front of a computer, and poor eating. Got this book for my Kindle, and immediately made some adjustments to my diet; I was already using a kind of Mediterranean diet, being Italian, but after reading the very clear explanations in his book about what sugar, salt, etc can do, I made some changes. The changes I made were: cut sugar way down, stop drinking fruit juice (orange juice, etc), cut salt way down, drink alot more water, eat more frequent smaller meals, as well as the recommended fruits and proteins, and not eat 2 hours before going to bed. This was no fluke…I have clearly stopped retaining water, can jog up stairs now, have “energy” in my legs which had felt weak before, and my heart palpitations (usally when I would get up and start walking, or lay down) have virtually ceased. Kind of angry at myself for not doing things soooner, but what really was at the core of my decision to make a change was his idea about not looking at ourselves as inevitably deteriorating, but rather as being able to achieve great health at any age. That combined with the very easy to understand explanations of nurtitional science just was perfect for me. I have not felt this good in years…now I am motivated to buy a home gym and work on the muscle piece.
My biggest obstacle to excersizing and moving was lack of energy…this has changed radically for the better in just a matter of two weeks.

addendum: update as of June 23d I have lost 30 pounds!! Sweet! Alot of it water I am sure, but you have to start somewhere. No more bloat! Hittin’ the gym again today!!

addendum 2: as of today, august 28, I have lost 50 pounds. Still adhering to key recommendations of this book.

addendum 3: My review is from the perspective of an out-of-shape layperson, not a professional nutritional book reviewer or athlete. Take it for what its worth. I shared the impact the book had on me, which was substantial. Latest was my blood sugar has changed to normal, from my being nearly diagnosed diabetic.
