Comprehensive Review of nutrition, ingrediants, sources and taste.,
In terms of flavor, I have tried all 3 (mocha, chocolate, vanilla) and they all taste like artifical flavoring and stevia – which most people will enjoy. The addition of chemical-based “natural flavors” cover over the bland taste of the protein powder. For anyone whose eaten a true 100% vegan protein powder (like HealthForce Warrior Food – which I also recommend) they basically taste like chalk.
Something important for every shopper to know is that “natural flavors” are chemicals – and not naturally occuring foods. Natural flavors are created through chemical processes using any natural source, including things that are not usually edible like bugs, human hair, duck feathers, petroleum (oil), beaver “spray” gland secretion, and GMO corn. Unfortunately the source from which the “natural flavors” come does not have to be listed. Many health experts consider this a convenient loophole for companies. Especially because a supplement with natural flavors can still be called Vegetarian or Vegan even if it is uses natural flavors that come from animals. Furthermore, we don’t know the health impact that natural flavors have. It’s challenging today to find a protein powder that does not include natural flavors. A brand like HealthForce is the cleanest supplement I know of with zero natural flavors. They may not taste like candy (natural flavors) but they taste like the food that are made with. Hopefully one day, the source for the natural flavor will be required on the label.
In the protein department, these Vega supplements use a combination of pea, alfalfa, pumpkin seed and organic sunflower seed proteins. All of the essential amino acids are found in this blend. Most vegan protein powders on the market use rice protein and pea protein – which are also the most inexpensive to produce. Vega uses the protein from 2 legumes (alfalfa and pea) and 2 seeds (pumpkin an sunflower). This is a grain-free list and I feel a healthier combination than many brands that stick to a single protein – like rice or pea alone. Using more than one type of protein powder provides a more balanced amino acid profile. Because no grains are used, this is a true gluten-free product.
Tart Cherry is added to provide a sweet/tart flavor, to reduce inflammation, reduce uric acid levels, and to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Cherries are one of the highest antioxidant food, boast antiviral and antibacterial properties and have been shown to slow the growth of and kill cancer cells without damaging healthy ones.
Turmeric Extract is used for its very high amount of antioxidants, and its anti-inflammation and anti-cancer properties. Currently turmeric (curcumin) is considered the #1 most effective anti-cancer herb and has been studied intensively. Black Pepper Extract is used to make the active properties of the Turmeric more potent – by 2000% according to studies.
Vega states that they use these 3 herbs for their “Recovery Properties” – meaning that it’s the antioxidant and anti-inflammation properties they are referencing. After intense exercise, their is excess oxygen in the blood and inflammation in the muscle tissue. Both of these harm the body, creating the sore muscle feeling and fatigue. So herbs like tart cherry and turmeric will reduce this inflammation and speed up muscle recovery after a workout.
Probiotics are also added. This aids the digestive process. There is a lot of debate right now over the true effectiveness of probiotics in supplement form. Most probiotics are delicate and easily killed in the stomach acid. Probiotics added to powdered mixes (like protein powder) rarely survive because the food must spend many minutes in the stomach digesting. Those probiotics found to be effective are ones that use special capsules coated to not break down until the small intestines. Probiotics are digestive bacteria found in the small intestines (predominantly) and large intestines (sparsely). The human body produces them naturally but many people benefit from supplementation because their diets contain too much wheat and grains – which contain yeast and create candida (very harmful to health). A single round of antibiotics will also kill the probiotic bacteria in they body.
Ultimatley, I feel that this supplement is one of Vega’s best. They keep the ingredients simple and use herbs to enhance a typical protein powder mix. Vega uses natural flavors in nearly all of their products – which I’m not thrilled about. But natural flavors are hard to avoid these days.
The biggest problem I have with Vega is their HUGE bump up in pricing. Vegan markets themselves like a premium brand when do not use premium ingredients. I do think that this ingredient list is good, but it does not use organic foods or super foods. To pay $50 for 19 servings for protein is $2.63 per 30g of protein. Do the math and this…
