    Vegan Bodybuilding~ A new believer… my husband!, November 18, 2010
    By

This review is from: Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness (Perfect Paperback)

Let me start this review by stating that my husband is not vegan, yet I am. He eats vegan at home, or he goes hungry 😉 As I was training for an upcoming Figure Show (my very first) I was seeing a personal trainer who didn’t believe in the vegan diet and certainly did not believe that a “vegan” could build muscle and look the part for the Figure Show. I had nothing but a challenge with him and ended up dropping him, and he dropped me. I was frustrated and looking for some guidance through other vegan athletes. I have heard the name “Robert Cheeke” before and knew he was a vegan. A year or so ago he was in Az doing a talk on Vegan Bodybuilding and I couldn’t make it… so I didn’t really understand how it all worked. Then came his BOOK!!! Vegan Bodybuilding and Fitness. Right away I ordered it and got to reading. Robert was great at replying to my emails with all the questions I had regarding serving sizes and for ‘non-bodybuilding’ types 🙂
My husband, who also was discouraged with the belief that vegans CAN have muscle, looked through the book at Robert’s pictures of himself and was in shock. He was wanting to mass build but wanted my help (in having his food ready and prepped for him). I made a deal with my husband, “I will make all the food for you to have a successful mass build and we’ll workout together, BUT, you will have to do it all vegan.” Without hesitation, he agreed! 🙂 So with the help of Robert Cheeke’s book, my husband gained weight and muscle on a vegan bodybuilding diet. I’m thankful for the book and for Robert’s knowledge. My husband believes that vegan CAN mass build, gain healthy weight, nice sized muscles and get all the protein they need without eating animal products 🙂
Now my husband and I eat vegan together, we weight train together and we both believe in Robert’s book!!!

Thank you so much Robert!!!!!! And thank you for sending my husband a signed book 🙂 We keep that copy, NICE!

Robert’s book is about one thing: Experience. Robert has led the life of a vegan bodybuilder over the past decade, traveling many different roads to his current path, and he shares everything with you in this book. From trying different protein supplements, deciding what works and what has side effects, and deciphering vitamin and mineral language that can sometime be intimidating, Robert manages to keep the reader informed on a manageable level. He also cites other successful vegan athletes, including a favorite of mine, Brendan Brazier, and discusses things such as our need to keep our bodies in an alkaline environment for best results. He provides a section that will help vegan athletes find the products they need (like non-leather gloves/straps).
Perhaps most helpful is the section where Robert details what he actually does for a workout, and how he preps beforehand and how he cools down afterward. He gives some explanation about each exercise in layman’s terms, which is helpful for me due to my limited experience. All throughout the book, he provides concrete information and backs it up with real world experience.
Robert’s first tip for improving your work ethic: Get rid of your TV. Nice.
Robert is an incredibly inspiring person, and when meeting him you can’t help but get caught up in his glowing demeanor. His book provides great assistance for people looking for inspiration and real knowledge about what they can do to get in shape and stay that way. I firmly believe that having strong, fit vegans in the public spotlight provides countless benefits, for people, for the planet, and for the animals. I’m on my own road to becoming a fit ambassador for veganism. I am already seeing real results, and I owe a lot of my motivation to Robert.
