Not Worth the Extra Money, May 1, 2012
This review is from: Braun SE7681 Silk-épil 7 Wet and Dry Epilator, White (Health and Beauty)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)
Previously, the Braun SE 7181 WD Silk Epil 7 Epilator Xpressive Pro, Orange/Copper was offered in Vine. Not in my newsletter, though. But I needed a new epilator, and after reading the reviews, decided to try it.

This item is exactly the same, except it has some extra covers and a shaving head. The extra covers are for delicate areas. What they really do is cover most of the epilator head, so you can access smaller spots, like your upper lip. Unfortunately, only the center of the epilator head is exposed, which makes it difficult to reach your upper lip. Too bad they didn’t place that opening off-center. The shaving head is pretty drugstore standard with the same old flimsy foil. I hate those foils. They fall off too easily! The shaving head does help finish up strays and picks up fine hair, but if I want to be THAT smooth, I use a Double Edge Safety Razor. I think these extras are overkill, especially considering how much more this costs than the epilator alone.

Now, for the epilator. This is bar none the fastest and best I’ve ever used, and I’ve used them since the original Epilady came out. Some of the finer features:

Pivoting head – easier to maneuver vs other epilators.
Ergonomic shape – easier to hold.
Speed – Slow is fast. Fast is really fast, less than half the time required using other epilators.
Light – Finally! Do you know, I have been sitting on the floor with a plant light aimed at my legs so I could see if I missed a spot? Excellent!
Massage head – gentler than express head because it keeps the tweezers farther from your skin.
Express head – the one I use the most, gets really close to the skin. Removes more hair faster than the massage head.
Battery – holds a charge for a long, long time!
Charger – charges in less than an hour straight out of the box
Immersible – to me, the best part of this is that you can clean the thing with soap and running water.
Speed choices – not exclusive to this product, but nice to have

I’ve used this wet and dry for my legs, armpits, and facial hair. I get best results using it dry. It leaves the skin on my face red, but only for a couple of hours, and it’s a lot easier than plucking.

I do have a couple of tips for technique. First, make sure you’re holding the epilator so the head is at a 90 degree angle to the area you’re de-hairing. What I mean is, don’t let it lay back or off to the left or right. Otherwise, it won’t reach the hairs. This is true of all epilators. You do not have to stretch your skin like you do with electric razors. You may need to say, around your knees, but I hardly ever stretch my skin. You’re not shaving with this thing. You’re yanking hair out. You don’t need to stretch the skin between your eyebrows to pluck those hairs. Stretch your skin only if necessary. Do not press the epilator against your skin. Hold it gently above your skin. It doesn’t need to touch your skin. It only needs to grab hairs. You don’t really have to worry about working “against the grain,” either. If you hold it slightly away from your skin, you can simply work it in small circles. Don’t try to move too fast. If you zip it from ankle to knee, you’re going to miss a lot of hairs.

Now to the pain: This hurts more than other epilators I’ve used. That’s because it yanks the hair faster than any other. For me, it doesn’t truly hurt, but it’s important to note in my review. If you have tried other epilators and gave up because it hurt, do not buy this one. If you haven’t tried epilators, I recommend the aforementioned version. This one is too expensive. If you’re just plain looking for a new epilator, and you want wet/dry plus electric razor head, go ahead and pull the trigger.

I nearly forgot about the wipes. Forget about the wipes. They have a bit of moisturizer, silicone, anti-irritants and fragrance. They’re pleasant, but they slick up the hairs, and reduce the efficacy of the epilator.

Some quick thoughts on this model specifically:
    * Removes smaller hairs than other models, so you can be more aggressive as stray hairs start to grow back
    * The “massagers” on the epilation head really do help
    * You can use it dry or completely-wet, but not damp (e.g., right after the shower won’t work)… and I must say that using it under running water dramatically reduces any discomfort, although it’s a bit harder to notice stray hairs
    * You can’t use it while plugged in (that would be a serious safety hazard in the shower!) but it means that whenever the battery eventually stops holding a charge, you’ll have to toss the unit)
    * This includes a trimming head, for the cases when you have longer hairs you want to attack (they have to be 1 cm or shorter before this will really pull them out)
    * This also includes a specialized cap for more-targeted facial hair (basically it just covers most of the epilator so you can do just a 1/4″ strip at a time, which reduces pain notably), but remember to use caution and do this only with a clean epilator, or it can make you break out
    * The small spotlight on the unit makes it much easier to see hairs you may have missed
    * The wipes really do help. You’ll use one and think it didn’t help that much, then try the other leg without one at all, and realize it WAS helping more than you realized 🙂 I used them the first time I epilated, but haven’t bothered subsequently. I haven’t tested to see whether using the wipes or epilating underwater is better overall, and I don’t know if you could do both, or if the water would rinse off the helpful ingredient from the wipes. Could be worth a test…

And some thoughts on epilation in general:
    * This seems obvious, but I have to say it: it only hurts when a hair is being removed. This means that the first time you epilate, it’s very uncomfortable. But since only a small percentage of the hair grows back before you epilate again (assuming you do it at least once every 3 months!), the subsequent touch-ups really aren’t bad at all, especially on your legs. (Underarms are less comfortable, and bikini area even less so. Face is also quite sensitive, though that probably varies by person, depending on how much tweezing you normally do.)
    * The first time you epilate, your legs will be unbelievably smooth. But hair grows back at different rates, so after a month or so of epilating (maybe one time each week), you’ll have tiny hairs here and there, that are starting to grow back, but are still too small to get. It’s less of an issue with this epilator than others, and the hairs aren’t really visible. So if you think someone’s going to be touching your legs, then shave 😀 but otherwise life is much easier if you just epilate once a week or so. Then if you don’t bother doing anything for a month or so, you’ll have a few stray hairs here and there, but nothing like someone who shaves regularly and then skips a month (or even a week… or even 3 days). Visible stubble is entirely a thing of the past.
    * You do have to use a loofah or some other type of exfoliation on your legs occasionally to prevent ingrown hairs (just little bumps on your legs–mine don’t turn red). But if you wax, or if you age 😉 you’ll have to do that anyway
    * And how could I forget the #1 reason to epilate: no more underarm bumps. You know, the ones that you ALWAYS have, despite a million products on the market that say they’ll banish them but don’t? Sometimes when you epilate, your skin will be red for 30-90 seconds afterward, but then it fades. So NO MORE BUMPS. That alone is reason enough to own an epilator, IMO 🙂 This also helps with bikini-area bumps, but I find in those cases that the redness can take several hours to fade, so it’s fantastic to use the day before swimming but would not be a good choice immediately before pool time
