Banana,
I love Optimum Nutrition gold standard whey protein. My favorite flavor is milk chocolate. I enjoy changing the flavor and sometimes buy two pound containers of mocha cappucino, cookies and cream. Right now I have an unopened new two-pound tub of caramel toffee fudge — we’ll see how that goes.
But I am working my way through a two pound tub of banana cream. I bought the banana cream because of favorable comments here on Amazon.
All I can say is the banana flavor tastes like chemicals. And I paid a premium price. The banana, for no good reason, costs significantly more than my favorite flavors. 99 cents an ounce is a lot more than 66 cents an ounce, right?
I will eat all the banana protein powder, cause no way would I waste thirty+ bucks worth of protein powder, but it is an unpleasant, chemical taste. I can’t figure out a way to doctor it up. If I add real frozen banana, the chemical taste still dominates. If I add cinnamon, which I enjoy in all other shakes, the chemical taste still dominates.
Yuck yuck yuck on the banana.
But I still love ON whey protein powder.

Protein good, Sucralose bad,
I got back into lifting after a 6-7 yr lay off (injuries and laziness). I use this now in my post-workout shakes. Along with changes in diet, I credit this whey protein islolate powder for playing a role in my gains. Most notably I recover faster when chugging a shake made with this right after my workout. It’s been great.
However….it’s sweetened with Sucralose. I’ve read that sucralose can lead to digestive problems, including killing off the good bacteria in your digestive tract that aids in nutrient absorption. This concerns me because if I’m making all these diet changes and chowing down protein…I don’t want my efforts (and money) to go to waste. I’ve also heard conflicting reports about the overall health effects of sucralose. Government (i.e. FDA) and industry backed studies say it’s harmless. Independent, health conscious sources say otherwise.
I cannot claim definitively that sucralose has potential harmful side effects. However, I don’t trust the FDA to have the consumer’s interest in mind when stories have come out about ammonia in ground beef. I am biased and don’t trust artificial sweeteners.
If you are too, then avoid this one because of the sucralose and try an all natural whey powder instead. I found one also by Optimum Nutrition. Seems like I’m not alone. They sell a “oats & whey” one that is all natural, no artificial ingredients, AND contains fiber. If you’re not someone who consumes much oatmeal or fiber, that’s a plus for you too.
